MEWA Harm Reduction Centre (MHRC) has been keen to expand its vision to gradually educate and take action to reduce the harm associated with drug use in the Kenyan Coast, which is a huge problem in all the towns along the Coast. A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) stated that there were significant quantities of heroin being seized in areas along the east coast of Africa.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the most serious long-term effects brought about by drug use in Kenya is the transmission of HIV among the populace. Under the effects of drugs, in addition to those Injecting drugs, those who engage in sexual activities are more likely to make rash and impulsive decisions. This has been verified in various interactive sessions held by MEWA Health & Rights Centre with People Who Use Drugs , Who Inject Drugs (PWUID). Certainly, drug use can spread HIV through transactional relationships. In terms of the makeup of study participants, “53% were single and 27% were cohabiting,” leading to conditions by which PWUID exchanged sex for “drugs, protection from the police, and accommodation.”<\/span><\/p>

A study by NACADA found that 24.14% of female Kenyan youths begin their drug usage due to peer pressure.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
