Achievements of MEWA Health & Rights Centre

Our achievements are a testimony that Harm Reduction can be successful in the Coast, and the Country, at large. These milestones motivated the MHRC to initiate and strengthen its intentions by formulating this Strategic Plan.

 

 

Our Achievements

Our achievements have put MHRC in the biosphere of leaders in Harm Reduction Programmes in both the Coast and the Kenyan nation in general.

Drug Manual

Developed a Manual for WWUID who use drugs to be adopted by National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCOP)

Drop in Centres

Succeeded to have MEWA Drop in Centres (DIC) gazettement by Kenya Medical and Dentist Board. Drop in Centres well catered with personnel with different professional background, and well equipped with commodities.

NHIF Accredited

NHIF has issued an accreditation letter on September 2020, awaiting NHIF to enlist MEWA Treatment & Rehabilitation Centre among the NHIF accredited facilities.

Peaceful co-existence

MHRC aims to establish a peaceful co-existence between law enforcement, health workers and the community.

Police AIDS Control Units

Successfully established two active Police AIDS Control Units (ACUs) - with support from the Inspector General’s Office, in Lamu and Mombasa.

Universal Access

We have Planned to make available Universal Access to Sexual Reproductive Health Services (SRHS)

Drug Policy & Financial Framework

In conjunction with Mombasa County Legal Department, we developed a Bill on Drugs and Substance Use, awaiting the Governor's assent

Harm Reduction Services

MHRC promised three years ago to provide efficient delivery of Harm Reduction Services – needles and syringes, therapy, livelihood trainings by partnering with different local and international partners

Waste Management Project

MEWA is partnering up with Wake Up International, to initiate a Waste Management Project. Our dream, is for MEWA to identify a land where the project can be initiated

HIV Care Management

MHRC intended to facilitate continuity of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Management in Mombasa Kilifi and Lamu. We succeeded to scale up and incorporate HIV Care Management within MEWA Drop-in Centres.

Treatment and Care

For more than 5 years MHRC supported prevention, treatment and care and support of PWUID (People Who Use/ Inject Drugs), and shall make clear definition and package, henceforth. We intend to do a Cost Model to support the justification for supporting services to people who use drugs.

Youth Awareness

Increased Youth Awareness of drugs, HIV-AIDS and Hepatitis virus. The need to support this young generation is critical and MEWA has tried what it could to provide Legal and Psychosocial Support Counselling

Law Reforms

We advocated for Law Reforms and worked closely with Judiciary Service System to implement Alternative Justice System ( AJS) i.e. alternative sentencing and scaling up Methadone Services in Prison. We still have to make it institutionalised, however, handicapped with limited resources needed to advocate law reforms.

Promote Partnership

We had good plans to promote partnership with Recovering PWUID and former PWU/IDss. By now, MEWA hosts a well-functioning and coordinated team of Narcotic Anonymous – NA - meetings, Network of People Who Use Drugs and Network of People Living with HIV.

Improve Human Rights of PWUID

MEWA has, with time developed a team of Certified Paralegal Officers trained on human rights that also receives external supervisory support from a law firm contracted by Open Society International for Eastern Africa. Most of the PWU/IDs know their rights and Police Officers, through Police ACU (AIDS Control Unit) Support the rights of people who use drugs.
